We’ve all read those books where a character enters a room and what follows is a generic description that, at best, we hope is short. This hands-on workshop shows participants how to make description work so well that the reader will not be tempted to skip over it ‘to get to the good part’ of the story.
I lead participants through a fun sequence of sensory data-gathering and imaginative exercises, culminating in an opportunity to use the strategies they’ve learned to achieve a specific descriptive goal.
Getting from Yawn to Yikes! Tension & Pacing in Storytelling
This is a fun, interactive workshop that shows participants how to add tension to scenes, create empathy for characters, and build the story arc toward a satisfying conclusion.
I lead participants through a set of fun, stimulating exercises during which they learn to ‘play at the borders’ of imagination and discover how to enhance their own storytelling, no matter the genre.
The Art of Misdirection: What a Mystery Writer Knows–and You Should too–About Hiding and Revealing the Truth
No one likes to be manipulated, but mystery writers do this all the time. We get readers to pay attention to what’s going on over here–look at the shiny object–so they don’t notice what we’re doing over there–planting clues pointing to the killer.
Play with strategies in this workshop and you might never read a book in the same way again. And you might also learn a few tricks for real life, where we are inundated with demands for our attention.
